Teletherapy is a way of utilizing on-line chat technology for face-to-face counseling sessions. Teletherapy consists of using Skype instead of a physical location to maintain regular mental health appointments. For clients with busy schedules, those who travel with their job but want to continue individual counseling, individuals who are unable to leave their home due to medical or mental health issues, stay at home mothers, and those who are in rural areas and want to have more choice regarding their mental health provider then Teletherapy may be a good fit for you.
Some things to consider regarding Teletherapy first, technical glitches can interrupt sessions. Technology isn’t full proof and sessions can be interrupted by poor connectivity, a server may go down, or computer problems may occur. As with other online communication and activity, Teletherapy is not secure, meaning that I cannot guarantee privacy from hackers. Also, learning how to engage in an online format can be difficult for some clients as body cues can be misunderstood and communication can be difficult at times. It’s important to clarify if you have any questions or concerns about how we are communicating during the session.
Finally, I do not record nor do I allow sessions to be recorded. As always, if you have any questions about Teletherapy please do not hesitate to ask. Teletherapy has many benefits to the client, you can literally schedule an appointment at almost any time due to the convenience of technology. For those clients who travel, have children at home, lead a very busy life, have medical issues, or simply lack transportation, Teletherapy allows for the continued treatment of your mental health needs.
Teletherapy sessions are 50 minutes in length at a rate of $125 per session. I no longer accept insurance so the session fee must be paid in full 24 hours prior to your scheduled appointment. If your session has not been paid for within 24 hours of the scheduled time, your session will be cancelled. A Skype account and Internet access is required.
When potential clients contact me for counseling I try to be very clear about the “kind” of therapist I am. For example, I am a goal oriented therapist that uses an eclectic approach to treatment – I do not believe that one size fits all as each human being is unique. I use many different theoretical frames of reference to assist my Clients develop insight and change behaviors. Further, I am not a therapist who believes that sessions are simply an outlet for someone to spend their time “venting” and then do nothing about their problems once they leave the session - I believe in results not excuses.
Clients are asked to create their treatment goals so that I know what they want to achieve from therapy. Goals are established the first session with my help if needed. Clients are then given homework to work toward those treatment goals.
Some Clients only require brief stints of treatment to resolve a relationship problem or some other issue that is affecting the quality of their life and their ability to deal with the situation. Others require more intense and long term treatment and symptom management due to the severity of their mental illness.
My job is to assist clients work through thoughts and feelings producing a change in behaviors that will ultimately allow them to achieve their treatment goals and improve the quality of their life.
